By Ferry

Steamship Authority
Year-round passenger and auto ferry service runs daily from Woods Hole (on Cape Cod) to Vineyard Haven by the Steamship Authority. From mid-May to mid-October ferries also dock in Oak Bluffs. The Steamship Authority provides the only ferry service that accommodates cars, and advanced reservations are required. (No reservations needed for walk-on passengers.) Additional Passenger Ferry Service
Several other passenger ferry services are available, leaving from Falmouth, Hyannis, and New Bedford in Massachusetts; as well as New York, New Jersey, and Rhode Island. Visit the Martha’s Vineyard Chamber of Commerce website for a list of Martha’s Vineyard ferry service providers.

After arriving on the Island you’ll have several options for ground travel if you wish to explore beyond the bustling harbor towns. See below for info on taxis, buses, rental bikes, cars, and mopeds.  

By Plane

Martha’s Vineyard Airport  (MVY) is located at 71 Airport Rd. in Edgartown.

Cape Air offers year-round service to and from Boston’s Logan Airport, Nantucket, and New Bedford, MA.  Seasonal service is available from Hyannis, Westchester County Airport in White Plains, NY, and Providence RI.

Seasonal direct flights are also available on JetBlue and Delta from New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), and on US Airways from Washington, D.C.’s Reagan National Airport (DCA).

By Private Boat

Marinas and mooring services are available on the Island in the harbors at Edgartown, Oak Bluffs, Vineyard Haven, and Menemsha village in Chilmark. You can find a list, with contact info, here.


Transportation On Martha's Vineyard

Once on Martha’s Vineyard, you’ll have access to taxis, public transportation, and a variety of rentals options. Of course, there’s plenty to explore in the harbor towns, within walking distance of the ferry docks.


Buses – The Martha’s Vineyard Transit Authority provides public transportation, with several bus routes connecting all towns on the Island. 1-day, 3-day, 7-day, and 31-day passes are available. All buses are handicap accessible and equipped with bicycle racks. Visit VineyardTransit.com for current info on routes, schedules, and fares. 


Taxis – Taxi service is available throughout the Vineyard, including at the ferry docks in Vineyard Haven and Oak Bluffs.


Car, Scooter & Moped Rentals – Motorized vehicle rentals can be found within walking distance of the Island’s ferry docks and at the airport. You’ll find a list of auto renting and leasing services here.


Personal Limousine Services – There are several private transport companies on the Island offering car, van, and limo driving services. Click here to see a list.


Bicycle Rentals – Bikes are a popular way to get around the Island, allowing visitors a way to avoid car traffic and get closer to the Island’s natural beauty. An extensive network of bike paths makes biking an especially desirable alternative to driving while providing recreation.
